Sockets Records (SCKTS011)

Washington, DC’s Imperial China's new full-length is a collection of nine songs, co-released by Sockets/Ruffian Records. Clocking in at 35 minutes of music, Phosphenes switches gears often, running between experimental post-rock, sampled-based tinkering, and punk. The album follows 2008’s critically acclaimed EP, Methods. As with Methods, Phosphenes was produced by Devin Ocampo (Faraquet, Medications). Tracking was done at Arlington’s famed Inner Ear, with additional recording, mixing, and mastering handled by Ocampo at his Treehouse Studio.

Imperial China will embark on a mini-tour of the Midwest in March and continue to support the album with northeast and southeast US dates throughout the spring of 2010. The group features Matt Johnson on guitar, bass, and percussion; Brian Porter on vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, and samples; and Patrick Gough on drums. Gough was in the DC noise-punk band Pitchblende in the mid-’90s.

Press
"Wiry rhythms and slashing squibs of squall quickly identify Washington, DC's Imperial China as heir to the area's rich post-punk past.” - Alternative Press

"The three-man experimental rock group has a fast-paced and surprisingly full sound, and traditional instruments are peppered with a healthy amount of electronic topping." - Washington Post Express

“the Rachmaninoff of the experimental rock world. Nothing seems too difficult for them to play and the band’s level of spontaneity is humungous. The band has a method of playing and interacting with each other on a recording that is completely original and imaginative." - Absolute Punk

“Slashing, experimental post-punk that's equally brainy and ballsy.” - Philadelphia Weekly
