BANG! BANG! RELEASE NEW ALBUM, TOUR
04/18/2007
Chicago rockers Bang! Bang! just finished the first leg of their 6 week tour, capping it with a brief return to the Windy City for a big CD release show on Saturday. The new album The Dirt That Makes You Drown officially hit stores on Tuesday of last week, and their show on Saturday at Chicago’s Beat Kitchen was a huge success. The band played to a nearly sold out crowd and were swarmed all night by fans anxious to hear all about the tour. As for the new album, it’s flying off the shelves but is always available at Morphius.com. In fact, the next 50 people... More >

A ROOM FULL OF TALENT: UNKNOWN INSTRUCTORS
04/11/2007
"Groove band Unknown Instructors is made up of Mike Watt (fIREHOSE, The Stooges), Joe Baiza (Saccharine Trust), George Hurley (fIREHOSE), Dan McGuire, David Thomas (Pere Ubu, guest vocals on three tracks), and Raymond Pettibon (cover art, vocals on "Twing-Twang"). All respected artists, all in one place. And they released The Master's Voice last month on Smog Veil Records. Master's follows up the previous album, The Way Things Work. Starting with a bass groove and adding helter-skelter guitars and syncopating drums, topped off with a spoken-word poetry that... More >

BEAUTIFUL TAPESTRIES: MORE THOUGHTS ON THRUSHES
04/04/2007
Thrushes premise is strikingly simple. Rock music should be beautiful. Elevating grand canyon reverberation to high art and venerating Phil Spector as the patron saint of sonic emotion, Thrushes craft gorgeous noise pop and swirling dream rock lullabies. Armed with stacks of old Crystals records played at the dark edge of town, this is the sound of blood on blood. ******************************** For the week of March 28 to April 4th, both “Heartbeats” and “Aidan Quinn” from the Thrushes' debut Sun Come Undone were in the Top 35 blogged tracks in the... WHAT WE NEED: BANG! BANG! + WILD BOYZ
04/02/2007
"Wasting no time, the frenetic “What We Need” has already been featured in a “Jackass” video [actually an Orbit gum commercial starring Steve-O of the MTV program Wild Boyz]. It’s the perfect pairing - someone has finally discovered that Bang! Bang! induce nothing but acceleration, deviance, and general misconduct. Flash spits out lyrics about cash, drugs, and the radio with an intensity usually reserved for the stage. “No Real World” and “Radio” from 2006’s Decked Out came close, but “What We Need” goes somewhere else entirely. This one’s covered in... More >

Big Takeover has compared the band to vintage Pere Ubu, The Strokes and The Oranges Band while describing Coffinberry as having "oodles and oodles of potential". Coffinberry's second full-length, God Dam Dogs, produced by Todd Tobias (of Guided By Voices fame) is slated for release on May first, but you can get a copy now from Morphius. DAWN OF MAN: CMJ REVIEW
03/26/2007
Produced by David Sitek from TV On The Radio and featuring some long-time DC scenesters, Dawn Of Man does the cock-tease with an EP that leaves you wanting more…much more…now. Icy-cool female vocals and washed out, reverby post-punk guitars anchor a delicate straddling of danciness, mid-’90s East Coast angularity and good ol’ fashioned insistent rhythm. You almost feel as cool listening to it as you imagine they knew they were making it. --Kenny Friday, CMJ More >
