GARY
B & THE NOTIONS "Get Those Crazy
Notions!" CD
GARY BARRETT, JR. is no new face to the
Baltimore indie scene. Over the last six years
under the stage name Your Imaginary Friend, he’s
given hundreds of solo performances
peppered with opening slots for Sufjan Stevens, the Hold
Steady, Of Montreal, Dismemberment Plan, and The Mountain
Goats, as well as his favorite songwriter,
Franklin Bruno. He’s hand distributed hundreds
of copies of his three entirely DIY full lengths, some
of which have gone to the band’s nearly 4000 devoted
myspace friends, the first 11 of which are all named “Lori” in
homage to their well-loved song by that name. Those
in the know will tell you about their favorite Gary Barrett
song and whose
mixtape they put it on for which ex-girlfriend or -boyfriend.
Or about the spring of ’04 when for three solid
months Gary’s answering machine featured a new
song composed that morning.
RIYL: Elvis Costello, Jonathan Richman,
Ted Leo
Songs:
1) Wear The Ring
2) Partridge Vs. Magpie
3) I Got A Car
4) Taller Than A Human
5) Necessary Drag
6) The Exercise Song
7) Lori
“When I first popped in Get Those Crazy Notions!, I was pretty sure I was listening to Elvis Costello back before he was doing cameos in Will Ferrell movies. More like circa My Aim Is True…or This Year's Model, Costello's first album with The Attractions than Talladega Nights.” — Any Given Tuesday
