BLASTITUDE INTERVIEWS PINK REASON
07/17/2007
Check out Blastitude's interview with Kevin DeBroux aka Pink Reason, about the long road and troubled times that inspired his Stiltbreeze debut abum Cleaning The Mirror. "DeBroux constructed the songs on record during a “tough period” in his life; one that saw him living out of cars, on floors and in friend’s closets. He attributes the length of the tunes from these sessions to his speed habit. When he could access recording equipment, DeBroux often stayed up for days at a time, perfecting each song’s sound by recording and rerecording guitar solos and... More >
PUNK REJUVENATORS: PAPER MAG ON THE DEATH SET
07/11/2007
The folks at Paper Magazine have come to a realization that we here at Morphius figured out some months ago: L.A. & Baltimore boast eeriely parallel underground music scenes! Might explain our recent mania for snatching up any No Age, Mika Miko or Abe Vigoda release we can get our hands on! Here's what Shannon Kelley over at Paper's Word Up! blog has to say: "I don't know if anyone else is aware of the punk movement that is currently taking place in Brooklyn, Los Angeles and now Baltimore, but it kicks major ass. Bands like Matt and Kim, Japanther,... More >
CAPS LOCKED & EXCLAMATION POINTS ARE GO
07/11/2007
I Heart Comix's review of a recent performance of The Death Set: "A few days ago, THE DEATH SET swooped into outr lives with their blast beats and dance rythms. Their are the epitemy of DIY pop punk meets dance floor party time. Part AUSTRALIAN, but now living in BALTIMORE, THE DEATH SET, call everyone from DAN DEACON to MATT & KIM to SPANK ROCK to BONDE DO ROLE comtemporaries. They are the second coming. We saw them play last night at their OPERATION IVY cover blew our minds." More >
THRUSHES ANNOUNCE MORE TOUR DATES!
07/11/2007
Thrushes are pleased to announce a summer and fall tour in support of their debut album “Sun Come Undone” distributed exclusively by Morphius Records. Thrushes have garnered an enormous and ecstatic response to their album, winning CMJ’s Sonic Bids Spotlight, a remarkable achievement earned well in advance of their first major tour. In early April, soon after the release of Sun Come Undone, Thrushes were the most blogged band in the world according to Idolator, outranking even The Shins, who had just released their much hyped third album. Thrushes’... More >
BANG! BANG! LIGHTNING TIES NOW AVAILABLE
07/06/2007
Jack Flash, the lead vocalist/ guitarist of Chicago “Sex Rock” band Bang! Bang! has recently designed the most electrifying tie yet. The ‘lightning bolt’ tie, Flash’s trademark on stage ever since the band started in late 2002, is finally available for all to wear, on and off stage alike. “The lightning bolt tie came to me in a flash of inspiration, no pun intended," stated Flash. For the past five years, Flash bought ties from thrift stores and strategically cut these into the shape of a lightning bolt. Now, this striking new line of ties are... More >
STRIKING: JACK FLASH MARKETS LIGHTNING TIE
06/25/2007
early lightning tie prototype From the Chicago Reader: "Local retro-ish rockers Bang! Bang! aren't so much concerned with discovering new sounds as they are with kicking around a bunch of proven punk ideas. But singer/guitarist Jack Flash is breaking out some next-level sartorial/merchandising schemes with the introduction of his Bang! Bang!-branded lightning bolt-shaped neckties. The press release that popped up in my inbox today lays out the unconventional neckwear's evolution: "Originally Jack cut his ties from pre-existing thrift store ties. This... More >
FIRST TWO REVIEWS OF NEW DEATH SET CD
06/21/2007
Yay! The first two reviews of The Death Set's latest release have popped up. Check out the Baltimore City Paper's take here. Austin's Covert Curiousity blog had this to say: "Earlier this week I received word about yet another exciting act who call Baltimore home. They're called The Death Set, and they have an album coming out next week via Morphius titled Rad Warehouses Bad Neighborhoods. It immediately caught my attention when I first turned it on, and I've found myself listening to it over and over again to shake cobwebs of dull music out of my... More >
PITCHFORK ON SI, PARA USTED
06/19/2007
Pitchfork finally got around to lauding Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba, a house fave here at Morphius. You can check out free mp3s from the compilation here. Rating: 8.2 "Cuba was a late 20th Century anomaly: a repressive communist government that fostered a vibrant, influential, and essential musical output. Cuban sounds resonate and persist in music throughout Latin America, Africa (where some of the most popular styles have roots in the Cuban rhumba), Europe, and even, yes, the United States. Americans tend to think of Cuba as... More >
