PERE UBU REMIX ALBUM
03/21/2007
Why I Remix Women is a collection of remixes of material from Pere Ubu's critically acclaimed album Why I Hate Women . The remixers include bandmembers Keith Moliné, Michele Temple and Ubu soundman Dids. Among the many stand out tracks on the disc is a track entitled “Moon, I’m coming Home”, Which includes elements of the tracks 2 Girls, Caroleen, My Boyfriend's Back and Synth Farm. Keith Moliné manages to mold these three songs into a prog masterpiece. A Short History of Pere Ubu Pere Ubu emerged from the urban wastelands of mid-’70s Cleveland to... More >
DOUBLE DAGGER ALBUMS EXCAVATED, ONLY 100 LEFT
03/16/2007
Combining squalling punk with art theory snark and social critique, Double Dagger seem like a band that wouldn't ignite the dance floor. Yet their shows are all sweat and glee, righteous fist pumps and the pogo. With a new album in the works and a handful of upcoming shows alongside Baltimore punk heroes The Fuses and Pere Ubu, it's your last chance to pick up their self-titled album. The band sold out awhile ago, however we have recently dredged up less than 100 copies. All are hand-screened and include a poster tucked inside. Art by Double Dagger's... More >
CRIMINALLY OVERLOOKED: A THRUSHES REVIEW
03/15/2007
Since it’s still officially Tuesday (which is new release day in the industry of music), allow me to heap some praise on one of the week’s most criminally overlooked new albums, Sun Come Undone by Baltimore band Thrushes. Released on their own Bird Note record, SCU is a reverb-drenched wash of classic shoegaze memories and laser-guided melodies. And those not-so-subtle references are for good reason. Rooted in the same oceanic depths and mid-’90s dream-pop masters as My Bloody Valentine, The Swirlies and Slowdive, Thrushes are a band out of time, and thank God... More >
DAVID LYNCH ON A RECORD: ANOTHER THRUSHES REVIEW!
03/13/2007
There is a record you reach for when nothing seems to be working—not relationships or plans or even drinking—or when everything is working all of a sudden, and you can barely stand it. It's not for cry-your-eyes-out catharsis or finally deciding to pull yourself together; it's for those moments in between, when you only can formulate one-word thoughts and you feel so scattered you can hardly move. Baltimore shoegazers Thrushes wrote that record, Sun Come Undone. The quartet's dreamlike wall of sound obscures simple, repetitive lyrics, creating one... More >
YAY! DAWN OF MAN REVIEW!
03/12/2007
Dawn of Man's In The Bronze Age is a four-song EP produced by TV On The Radio's David Sitek. Singer Alison Russel's voice is mostly monotone and always breathy. A post-punk 90's pop rock teaser, In The Bronze Age comes out strongest on "The Chosen", breaking off onriffing guitars and thumping drums, and a simple chorus that gives just enough to make this the best song on the EP. At times sounding like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (with a couple more members and a lot more sophistication), Dawn of Man's EP might not strike you as excellent at first, but it's going... More >
TEENAGE TEARDROPS: BOUTIQUE VINYL LABEL
03/09/2007
Morphius is proud to distribute Teenage Teardrops, a boutique label that specializes in limited-edition vinyl releases. Based in the burgeoning LA scene, from which break-out band Mika Miko hails, the label's first release, a super charged 7" from Arizona noise punks Issei Sagawa, has already sold out! Despite being less than year old, Teenage Teardrops has charmed the likes of ANP Quarterly and The Fader blog, recently garnering feature interviews in both publications. Thankfully we got our hands on their latest releases, both of which are limited to 500... More >

GOLDFISH AND GHOSTS: THRUSHES INTERVIEW
03/08/2007
To Here Knows When: Thrushes keeps the shoegaze flame burning all these years later Thrushes know they're about 15 years late to the shoegaze party. After all, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive, and other seminal loud-quiet-loud drone-pop groups were pioneering the sound while all four members of Thrushes were still in high school. Echoes of all of the above are in the local band's dreamy, feedback-drenched debut, Sun Come Undone, but more often than not Thrushes occupies a nebulous sonic space all its own: Think Mogwai fronted by Mary Timony, with Phil... ARBOURETUM: PITCHFORK INTERVIEW
03/07/2007
There's an amazing, lengthy interview with Dave Heumann of Arbouretum up on Pitchfork covering the band's recent album Rites of Uncovering, Heumann's past work with Will Oldham, speculations on Cass McComb's forthcoming album and much, much more! Here's a taste, with Heumann giving shout outs to the fecund Baltimore scene: Pitchfork: Do you have anything to say about the bands coming out of Baltimore right now? Beach House had a big year. And there was the closing of the Talking Head on New Year's Eve, etc. Heumann: I'm really happy for Beach House. They... More >
