SARCASM THAT HITS THE MARK: THE LIBRARIANS
02/23/2007
"Any review of a Librarians release is going to have to start with something like "These guys are from West Virginia?" With an indie disco flavor that is very palatable, Alright Easy Candy Stranger sounds as sweet as the treat its title refers to. And most urbanites who think banjos and Deliverance (or, at best, All Good Festival and WVU) when they hear Morgantown will be able to enjoy this accessible gumdrop of a debut full-length. Synthed-out post-punk dance revival lead-off track "Culture Vulture" has a vocal intensity (something like a caffeine-injected... More >
HEY LAND LUBBERS: THE SCOURGE OF THE SEA TOUR
02/21/2007
"Unassuming, rough-around-the-edges indiefied folk-rock. The gentle melodies have a way of popping into your head days after an initial listen. The wistful yearnings of the lyrics are tempered with wry realism, just as fuzzed-out, drop-D guitar strums interact with bedroomy acoustic instruments... sure gets under your skin." - The New Haven Advocate The Scourge of The Sea humbly bear the distinction of being Alias Records' (home to Archers of Loaf) first signees in nearly ten years. There has to be something special about a band that can rouse an... More >
THRUSHES PULL IT TOGETHER ON DEBUT SUN COME UNDONE
02/14/2007
Despite not being officially released till March, shoegaze revivalists Thrushes' debut Sun Come Undone has already garnered raves from the blogosphere (here, too!) and Baltimore's City Paper. Lucky for you, Morphius got the scoop and you can order the album early (like, right now) by clicking here. Check out this review from the music blog Any Given Tuesday: "This Baltimore-based band is on a mission to make reverb a household word. Luscious and saccharine, Thrushes' sound replicates the 'wall of sound' like it's a full-time job, and on tracks like "Into... More >
LEWIS BLACK WINS GRAMMY FOR BEST COMEDY ALBUM
02/14/2007
Lewis Black won a Grammy, what! From his myspace blog: "That's right, Lewis won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for his standout CD The Carnegie Hall Performance. The award was presented in a pre-telecast ceremony this evening in LA. Although not on the televised broadcast, nearly 100 awards, including Best Comedy Album, were broadcast on XM satellite radio for the first time ever. Congratulations to Lewis for this well-deserved honor. I know he's incredibly excited, thrilled and every other adjective to have received the award. And god knows I'm excited... More >

PUNK PLANET ON THE SELMANAIRES
02/12/2007
"Here Comes The Selmanaires was a pleasant surprise in my review bundle this month. This CD has a lot going on in terms of musical styles, combining surf rock, garage rock, and rock 'n' roll music into one smooth and enjoyable disc. It's a common mistake of most bands that venture into multi-genre blending to end up with a finished product that is jerky and disoriented. The Selmanaires understand the importance of juxaposition, and therefore avoided sounding like a messy weird jumble of unrelated songs; they've also created a solid, catchy, and upbeat album. I... SCRAPE OFF THE DROSS: DAWN OF MAN REVIEW
02/09/2007
Beatbots review of Dawn of Man's EP "In the Bronze Age": "Freedom from rules, freedom from constraint / freedom to create anything we make / rivals, we’re without thoughts of never paying / movement, we insist, is always unrestrained.” So begins Dawn of Man’s “A to Z,” a surefire anthem of a single that is buoyed by equal parts independent ideology, bright guitar riffs, and brassy percussion. Frontwoman Alison Russell’s vocals affect a gruff matter-of-factness that exudes self-confidence while eschewing the husky croons, winsome coos, and diva-esque cries... More >
