SAROLTA ZALATNAY
Title: S/T
Format: CD
Label: Finders Keepers
Price: 11.09 USD
Street Date: 4/24/07 - Shipping Now!
If you were to tear a hundred pages from Pamela Des Barre's 'I'm With The Band', a fistful of anecdotes from 'The Abba Story', and the most titillating tales from Marianne Faithfull's biography and staple them all together you may well find a mutant monograph which is brave enough to hold a flickering candle to the story of Sarolta Zalatnay.
1970 marked a significant new era in Hungarian pop music. Zalatnay and her band members were developing their own new progressive rock group and Hungary was learning quickly. Taking cues from the British hard rock scene, Hungarian pop fans were now demanding that the psychedelic guitars be cranked up. And as quickly as the style-conscious Zalatnay had previously adopted her day-glo sixties image she was equally as speedy to don dark glasses and a black leather jacket to re-invent herself and a new generation of pre-glam hard-rockers.
Loud, staccato basslines and closely recorded drums with a percussive cowbell became the mainstay of the golden-era (Hungarian Label) Pepita sound. From full funk-rock throttle, high-octane hammond jams to her versatile ability to carry melancholy ballads had spawned Zalatnay as full-tilt rock goddess throughout Europe.
Metronomic drum breaks and solos were the spiked outcome of her band members' desire for a heavyweight funk-rock sound -- and the inclusion of these percussive elements alone would spearhead a Zalatnay revival amongst English and American DJs almost 30 years later.
"Beware, Sarolta Zalatnay is addictive!" And lucky for us, on her travel through the woods she left us a lot of shiny white pebbles...

SPANK ROCK
Title: FabricLive 33
Format: CD
Label: Fabric
Price: 12.99 USD
Street Date: 4/24/07 - Shipping Now!
2006 saw the emergence/takeover of Spank Rock, the name plastered on every magazine cover, lighting up every blog and gracing most/all 'Best Of' charts by the end of the year. Their debut 'YoYoYoYoYo' caught the ear of just about anyone, well, anyone with an ear, and left everyone and their media dog panting to find more about these boys. Yes, these boys. Boys who had created an imaginative, artistic sound that no one else could quite touch: combining hip hop with the bass-driven sound of Baltimore house, filtering filthy raps into deep electro and furiously quick BPM's, and the odd guilty pleasure to boot. Despite all the hype and media-worshipped success, they still have a rare, down to earth charisma and the addictive enthusiasm of 4 starry-eyed boys from Baltimore, completely in awe of their position and unaware of just how much they've wowed the world.
When preparing their Fabriclive CD, the boys were fully prepared for their mix to be compared to the one from their label mate Diplo, coming from the same east coast and often helplessly grouped into the same category (mashup, party-style DJing etc)…so to battle the comparison, they deliberately altered the mix.
"I came up with the idea that every person that does a mix after the last person always has to start with the song that the last one ended with. So that last song, the idea was we were gonna put it at the end so you listen to ours and it ends, and you listen to Diplo's and that's what it kicks off with – so they all have a connection together." – Ronnie Darko
And the result is Fabriclive 33, a statement-making mix bursting with personality. From the dialogues in the intro and outro (which Alex secretly recorded before their performance on the Jimmy Kimmel show) to their secret sound effects to their debauched singing to just the quick draw, short attention span levelling of genres, if this mix asks a question, the answer is downright hilarious. Tricks are for kids and don't you forget it.

Title: Pullhair Rubeye
Format: CD/LP
Label: Paw Tracks
Price: 10.69 USD/10.69 USD
Street Date: 4/24/07 - Shipping Now!
Avey Tare is Dave Portner of Animal Collective and Kria Brekkan is Kristin Anna Valtysdottir formerly of the band múm. The two met a few years back and started playing music together in the summer of 2005. Recently they married and now live together in New York City. They recorded their debut collaboration "Pullhair Rubeye" with guitars and piano on an eight track in their practice space in Brooklyn. Then they traveled to upstate New York where the record was mixed down onto a two track borrowed from a friend who bought it at a garage sale for a dollar. Just as the two were completing the mix, the two track broke down and Avey and Kria didn't hear the mixes until two months later when they obtained another two track. After this short vacation, they were surprised by the sounds they had made.

MONOTRACT
Title: Trueno Oscuro
Format: CD/LP
Label: Load
Price: 10.69 USD/10.69 USD
Street Date: 4/24/07 - Shipping Now!
Guitar drums and electronics lock together into a frightening miasma. Monotract have recorded a record so unreal that it warps reality unto itself. Their 2006 record on Ecstatic Peace, xprmntl lvrs, hinted at the form destruction that this record delivers in spades. Songs exist as pure sine wave terror, like long taffy pulled by tractors miles apart. Nancy Garcia weaves a Spanglish tale of alluring fatality while Roger Rimada hits the drums that bubble under black hooded electronic oscillations emitted by Carlos Giffoni. Light bulbs explode, couch cushions swell, and nipples get hard. This is the new method, with new tools.
Monotract has existed since at least 1998 and has tons of other releases with three other full lengths as well as live records, tapes and 7 inches. They have moved all over the Eastern US seaboard from Miami to their current base in New York. Band member Carlos Giffoni is astoundingly active, booking the NO FUN FEST, a yearly summit of the best minds of the current noise scene, held in New York.

SILVER DAGGERS
Title: New High and Ord
Format: CD/LP
Label: Load
Price: 10.69 USD/10.69 USD
Street Date: 4/24/07 - Shipping Now!
Los Angeles based Silver Daggers are a streamlined bullet to the brain from a unusually shaped pistol. Using wiry templates of songs perfected by anarcho masters such as the DOG FACED HERMANS, and adding saxaphone fury and gutteral guitar scrape - a new rock language emerges. With a new creep vibe running through the deserted subway tunnels of Los Angeles and emptying into ground zero center stages like the SMELL and IL CORAL. SILVER DAGGERS generate new sparks and suck you, the listener, into the tiny foam headphones.
Past singles on labels like Not Not Fun have sketched out a song based vision of agit pop of remarkable power. For a young band they have acquired a deadly precision. Indeed as a five piece band they operate as a single muscle. Its very apparent they have opened the crypt and found the secret that culture vultures will stare at like apes. Future sound just in time for a culture caught in caustic feedback loops.

GANG GANG DANCE
Title: Self-Titled
Format: CD/LP
Label: Fusetron
Price: 8.99 USD / 10.59 USD
"The art-rock underground in Brooklyn is always percolating, but lately theres something scalding in the water, considering the brilliantly disparate sounds of Sightings, Animal Collective, Double Leopards, Excepter, Mouthus, all the outsider outfits on the Space is No Place compilations, and so much more. Gang Gang Dance just might be the tip of this sky-high geyser; this LP, their first official release is an absolute mind-washer, two side-long tracks of elongated vocals, 3-D percussion, electronic breakdowns, and skin-raising noise. ..no one could've predicted the bracing originality of their new ensemble." - Marc Masters, WIRE. Features Tim DeWit (ex-Cranium, Ssab Songs, Angelblood, White Magic, Neil Michael Hagerty, Cass McCombs), Brain DeGraw (ex-Cranium, Ssab Songs, Angelblood), Liz Bougatsos (Actress, Angelblood), Josh Diamond (Ssab Songs), and the late Nathan Maddox.

EXCEPTER
Title: Alternation
Format: 2xLP
Label: Fusetron
Price: 14.99 USD
"Half-recorded in one blizzard, and completed by the next, Alternation is a years-in-the-making, tossed-off-in-a-moment exploration of the difference between EXCEPTER live on stage and EXCEPTER alone at home and the goal to eradicate the distinction between the two. Double the length and twice the depth of past EXCEPTER releases, Alternation is EXCEPTER looking both ways, a geometric expansion around all the territories marked so far in their brief discography: the primal death trips of Ka, the noise pop tropics of Vacation, the long drone goodnight of Throne, the cool electro doom of Self Destruction and the blasted steam cycle of Sunbomber." - Excepter Double LP in heavy duty, full color gatefold jacket. Vinyl issue of the 5RC CD.

EXCEPTER
Title: Ka
Format: CD/LP
Label: Fusetron
Price: 9.29 USD / 10.79 USD
"Excepter is the new group spearheaded by J F Ryan, former electric tree-branch swinger for the No-Neck Blues Band. Using a mutating system of synchronized electronics engineered to ensure live sequencing, Excepter seeks to carry freestyle composition from the tip of the tongue on down to the ones and zeros. All tracks on this LP were performed and mixed live to stereo. Digital editing was only used to arrange the phantasmagoric second side, a tribute to HP Lovecraft's novella Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath. Excepter also marks the singing debut of dancer/choreographer Caitlin Cook. Guaranteed to make you dream in color." The CD version includes the 'Vacation 12"'.

EXCEPTER
Title: Vacation/Forget Me
Format: 12"
Label: Fusetron
Price: 8.19 USD
"Even though it would be wrong not to consider these protest songs against the back porch policies of certain undisclosed and secure locations, we shouldnt let THEM come between us. EXCEPTER says, "Yeah, well play" ... freestyle, the crawl, the butterfly, the breast, the rest. "How long will you stay?" Just as expressions and intuitions reflect the oceans unleashed, there is no desert island, dig, just the big, bare teeth of EXCEPTER there, smiling beneath. "You forgot something?" To survive the coming weather, you are going to need to know a sailor, a captain, an engineer, a figurehead, as well as a pirate, so SHOW ... A continuous stream of music split into two sides. Performed and mixed live to stereo. SS EXCEPTER:"Were only a world away." - Excepter.

SIGHTINGS
Title: End Times
Format: CD
Label: Fusetron
Price: 9.29 USD
"Fiery phoenix, four horsemen, or just plain ferocious, Sightings is back with another free rock H-Bomb. Comprised primarily of improvisations and recorded for the price of cassette tape, they leave no doubt western civilization is coming to an end....But seriously folks, this CD is companion to a vinyl release on the EN/OF label. EN/OF is a series of releases from the Bottrop-Boy record label. Every release contains a 12" record & an art edition and is limited to 100 copies. Sightings is paired with the German painter Daniel Richter who contributed an exclusive piece, "Das Schonste Ist Geschichte", an offset print with hand-painted elements. The LP features three tracks from "End Times" as well as another exclusive track. Richter was kind enough to lend artwork for the CD as well. "End Times" is 56 minutes of head-rinsing to take the millennarian fever to the next level."

RICHARD YOUNGS & ANDREW PAINE
Title: Mauve Dawn
Format: LP
Label: Fusetron
Price: 10.09 USD
"For the past eight years Andrew Paine and Richard Youngs have met on almost every Sunday and recorded music. Mauve Dawn is the result of ten meetings during 2004. Its nine tracks feature processed epinette des vosges, glockenspiel, vintage keyboards and guitars alongside granularly synthesised household objects hacked together with resonated voices and filtered bells in a stereo field heavy on ring modulation. One part of the Mauve trilogy, this is an instrumental album of classic length."
