THOR

Title: Devastation of Musculation
Format: CD
Label: Smog Veil
Price: 8.29 USD distro / 8.69 USD store

Jon Mikl THOR is an enduring icon of glam rock/metal, and one of the true originators of rock theatre. THOR's enviable career got off the ground with his appearance on the Merv Griffin Show in 1973 and he has maintained a steady pace ever since, selling hundreds of thousands of records.

Anticipation abounds for THOR's follow-up to the widely acclaimed 2005 Smog Veil releases Thor Against The World(SV57) and An-THOR-logy(SV58), and is it any wonder? From a Halloween appearance on the Vancouver morning show Urban Rush TV to accolades in Blender and New York's Village Voice, the unanimous joy in this artist was made clear. The U.K.'s highly acclaimed publication Classic Rock reviewed the An-THOR-logy DVD and named the release a Top-10 for 2005!, writing "Self styled Norse God of metal terrifies grannies on new anthology...And there's no let-up as a superhuman selection of performance and Ragnarockin' videos follow..." Canadian trade publication Chart Attack covered a live performance claiming "in short, it was madness! A couple friends who joined me on this wild night claimed the show changed their lives as they had never seen anything like it before. All Hail Thor!" With its 10 songs and video, the new release is THOR's darkest album in the band's 25 year history and marks a return to the power metal that earned THOR its remarkable cult following.

Spotlight on William Galison and Madeleine Peyroux's ‘Got You On My Mind'

EXCLUSIVE!!
MADELEINE PEYROUX and WILLIAM GALISON
Title: Got You On My Mind
Format: CD
Label: Waking Up Music
Price: 7.99 USD distro / 8.49 USD store

With the growing popularity of delicate mash-up crooners CocoRosie, acclaimed chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux is poised to enchant urban hipsters along with her dedicated fanbase of classic jazz and blues lovers. Now, don't get it wrong: Peyroux is not reinterpreting standards with drum machines and meandering samples. She's all voice and polish, with some of New York's best session musicians as accompaniment. But she taps the songs that CocoRosie merely evoke, covering such luminaries as Billie Holliday, Bessie Smith, Fats Waller, and more modern fare like Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen, and Serge Gainsbourg.

In 2003, Peyroux collaborated with noted harmonica virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist William Galison to record 'Got You On My Mind,' an homage to artists as diverse as Josephine Baker and John Lennon, while offering up a handful of original delights. The album is stripped down, with most of the songs captured in their first take, a nod to Peyroux's days as a Parisian street musician. At turns twangy, sultry and always soulful, Peyroux's rhythmic guitar and unadorned, smoky vocals are perfectly matched with Galison's wildly expressive harmonica ditties. Notables such as Carly Simon and Bob Dylan bassist Tony Garnier appear, rounding out the album.

NEW DISTRIBUTED TITLES:

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS
Title: Get Lonely
Format: CD/LP
Label: 4AD
Price: 9.99 USD / 8.09 USD

Last year, The Mountain Goats released an album called The Sunset Tree, and something unusual happened. John Darnielle - long recognized by his fans as one of the most imaginative and downright thrilling lyricists of his generation - suddenly found the rest of the world starting to think the same way. The album, the most nakedly autobiographical in a discography which spans 400 or more songs across scores of releases, was widely hailed as a masterpiece; it went on to become the most successful in Mountain Goats history.

Get Lonely is every bit as assured as its predecessor, but the mood is entirely different. If The Sunset Tree - which chronicled the fraught, violent relationship between Darnielle and his stepfather - derived its power from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, Get Lonely is the haunted aftermath. It's a reflective, intimate record; the mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. Musically, it's a quiet triumph. Even at its most languid, Get Lonely is never merely pretty; even at its most troubled, it is never merely dark. It is, in fact, a delicately nuanced gem - an uncannily coherent and subtly redemptive record which will come to be seen as The Mountain Goats' most resonant, assured and magical collection of songs so far.

RATATAT
Title: Classics
Format: CD/LP (Deluxe limited edition gatefold, embossed LPs!)
Label: XL Recordings
Price: 9.99 USD / 9.99 USD

Mike Stroud and Evan Mast have finally completed work on their second album, humbly titled Classics (and while we all think that each track is a "classic" in it's own right, this is NOT a Greatest Hits compilation of any sorts).. They'd have finished a lot sooner had their self-titled debut, released in 2004, not performed so well in the US. After changing their name from Cherry to Ratatat just in time for their tour with Interpol, the duo garnered a serious amount of praise for their first single release, "Seventeen Years" on Audiodregs Records. The album was released shortly afterwards, and in addition to a glorious press response Mast and Stroud found favour with a number of bands. This recognition from their peers took them on the road around North America and Europe playing shows with The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Stills and Mouse On Mars. They eventually packed away the flight cases after well over a year's worth of touring, and set about making the follow-up, with an impressive 20,000 album sales under their belts. The record began life in Mast's new Crown Heights apartment, but really took form when they spent 6 weeks out of the city at a friend's house in upstate New York. Of course, Classics remains resolutely instrumental, but they have however introduced a wealth of new sounds, from acoustic and slide guitar through to sleigh bells and cello. Having laid out their blueprint with Ratatat, their vastly improved production and writing makes Classics a refinement of their art. Throw in the remixes they've recently been commissioned to make, the impending second volume of their mix tape, and their first ever full headline tour of the US, and you have some pretty exciting prospects.

WILDERNESS
Title: "Living Through" / "Part Ways"
Format: 7"
Label: Jagjaguwar
Price: 2.69 USD

"Living Through" / "Part Ways," the first 7-inch released by WILDERNESS, contains two previously unreleased songs done at Silver Sonya Studios, the same studio as where their first two full-lengths were recorded and mixed. On "Living Through", thundering bass and dangerous shards of guitar splatter before JAMES JOHNSON as he walks his plank, while on "Part Ways" WILL GOODE channels his pummelling drums through the gates.

STEFFEN BASHO-JUNGHANS
Title: Last Days of the Dragons
Format: CD
Label: Locust Music
Price: 9.59 USD

"Last Days of the Dragons" is Berlin based STEFFEN BASHO-JUNGHANS' wondrous collection of 8 free wheeling finger picking 6 and 12 string guitar tunes and what a doozy it is! Last Days marks the third in locust's perennial series of Wooden Guitar solo discs since the 2003 release of the compilation of the same name.

PAUL FLAHERTY
Title: Whirl of Nothingness
Format: CD
Label: Family Vineyard
Price: 9.59 USD

Saxophonist PAUL FLAHERTY is New England's purveyor of the ecstatic jazz pulse. Even before his 1978 debut Flaherty remained unshakable in the pursuit of soul healing and demon dashing through freedom music. "Whirl of Nothingness," Flaherty's second solo album, is eight pieces of alto and soprano saxophone steeped in the theme of loss channeled through blasting improvisations that showcase his fabulous wailing and inferno of sound to stark bluesy melodies. Even without drum buddies CHRIS CORSANO or RANDALL COLBOURNE, Flaherty's horn shudders and roars in gargantuan ways. In the slim cannon of solo horn records (alongside ANTHONY BRAXTON, COLEMAN HAWKINS, PETER BRöTZMANN, ARTHUR DOYLE), "Whirl of Nothingness" stands triumphantly strong and wholly distinct as a shifting sphere of sound poetry and spiritual tongue.

ELUVIUM
Title: When I Live by the Garden and the Sea
Format: CD EP
Label: Temporary Residence Ltd.
Price: 5.99 USD

Over the course of three albums ELUVIUM (aka MATTHEW COOPER) has crawled from total obscurity to his rightful place as one of American's premier modern composers. Tying up his career to this point - and acting as a companion piece to "Talk Amongst the Trees" - the four pieces on "When I Live by the Garden and the Sea" showcase both the neoclassical piano-driven elegance and the tidal drones that he has become almost famous for. It takes his explorations in sound and vision to their logical conclusion, clearing the way for a new phase to be unleashed on his next album in spring 2007.
